.ke Domain Prices, Renewals Included

Registration and renewal for each Kenyan extension, shown together, since the renewal is what you keep paying year after year. Figures pulled from our live pricing on 26 October 2026.

Most hosting companies in Kenya will tell you what a .co.ke costs for its first year. Very few say what year two costs, yet that is the number that shapes the true cost over all the years a business keeps its name. Below is our complete list, awkward gaps and all.

The full .ke table: register and renew

All figures are SiteBoma's own selling prices in Kenyan Shillings, with our margin already included. So that a discount cannot make the number look kinder, the multiple measures renewal against the standing registration price, not the promotional one. Our domains page carries the complete list of all 544 extensions we sell.

Where the year-two jump comes from

A domain's opening year is normally sold at a promotional price, and the renewal is the standing rate. Registries charge a wholesale fee for each year. Any first-year discount is a marketing expense the provider carries in order to win you over, and no provider carries it a second time.

This is how pricing works right across the industry, not a policy of one company, and nothing about it is dishonest. The dishonest part is promoting year one while saying nothing about year two. This page exists so that we do not do that.

Schools face the steepest rise of any .ke extension

Registering a .sc.ke costs KSh 240, while keeping it costs KSh 1,800 a year, about 7.5 times the opening price. Any school that budgets from the registration figure will come up short in each year that follows. Running a school? Plan with the renewal number. Read about school websites.

Outside .ke, the gaps grow much wider

Next to the rest of the market, the Kenyan extensions are gentle. Of the 544 extensions in our catalogue, 222 cost more than twice their standing registration price to renew. These are the largest gaps on our list at the moment:

Extension Register Renew Multiple
.host KSh 770 KSh 17,150 22.3×
.name.ng KSh 50 KSh 1,080 21.6×
.courses KSh 330 KSh 6,070 18.4×
.study KSh 330 KSh 6,070 18.4×
.press KSh 770 KSh 13,560 17.6×
.lat KSh 300 KSh 5,060 16.9×
.lol KSh 300 KSh 5,060 16.9×
.pics KSh 300 KSh 5,060 16.9×

The worst cases tend to be novelty extensions with a cheap first year. Check the renewal before you build a brand on one.

Four questions that reveal the real price

Put these to any provider, SiteBoma included, and you will know where you stand:

  1. How many shillings a year is the renewal? Ignore the first-year figure. A provider who will not give you a straight answer has already answered.
  2. On what date does the offer end? When no end date is given, the offer finishes whenever the seller decides it should.
  3. Who is named as the registrant? That should be you or your organisation, never your web designer and never the host. With .ke domains, getting this wrong is a common problem.
  4. Can it be transferred, and at what cost? The registrant owns a .ke domain and is free to transfer it. Anyone who hints otherwise has given you grounds to leave.

Budget with the renewal figure, not the registration one. Across five years, renewal is the only number that counts.

Who is in charge of .ke

KENIC, the Kenya Network Information Centre, administers the .ke namespace. It keeps the registry and decides who is allowed to hold each extension. Providers such as SiteBoma sit further down the chain as resellers: eligibility is not ours to set, and we have no power to make exceptions.

Some extensions are restricted, notably .ac.ke, .sc.ke and .go.ke. Each is meant for a particular type of institution, and you may be asked for documents. The rules belong to KENIC and can change, so check what it currently requires before you rely on a restricted extension. By contrast, .co.ke and .or.ke are open.

.ke pricing: questions we hear often

.co.ke is KSh 1,200 to register and KSh 1,700 a year to renew. Bear in mind that registering and renewing are priced separately, and from the second year onwards it is the renewal price you pay.

In most cases year one is sold at an introductory rate, while the renewal is the normal price. Each registry charges providers a fixed wholesale amount per year. When a provider discounts the first year, it pays for that discount itself to attract you as a customer, and it does not repeat the favour in year two. The pattern runs across the whole industry rather than belonging to any single company, so ask for the renewal price before you commit.

The schools extension, .sc.ke. Registering one costs KSh 240, but keeping it costs KSh 1,800 every year, roughly 7.5 times what the first year cost. A school setting next year's budget should work from the renewal figure, not the registration one.

It sits in the group of restricted .ke extensions, each meant for a particular type of organisation, and this one is meant for schools. KENIC, the national registry, decides who qualifies, not SiteBoma, so confirm the current requirements with KENIC before you build plans around it. If a restricted extension turns out to be out of reach, .co.ke and .or.ke are open.

Usually, if you sell to people in Kenya. A .co.ke shows at a glance that you are local, and it is an ending Kenyan buyers know and trust. When most of your customers live abroad, a .com carries further. Many firms buy both and redirect one to the other.

Yes. The person or organisation named as registrant owns a .ke domain; the provider that hosts it does not, and you are free to take it elsewhere. To start, request the authorisation code from your current provider. A provider who claims your domain cannot be moved has just given you a good reason to move it.

Not necessarily. Registries adjust their prices from time to time, and every promotion has a stated end date. Because this page builds its table from our live pricing on every load, the figures reflect today, not the day the text was written.

Look up a name and see its price

Search for a .ke name and you will see both its registration and its renewal price before paying anything.
