The Plan Most Churches Need

For a typical church in Kenya, a small shared hosting plan is all it takes.

Sermon recordings and the storage question

Churches get caught out by this more than anything else, so here it is plainly. Audio costs little to host, and video costs a lot. A 45 minute sermon saved as a spoken word MP3 is around 20MB, which means a year of weekly sermons adds up to about 1GB. Any plan holds that with ease.

Record the same sermon as 720p video and that one file is 500MB to 1GB. A few months of them will fill even the largest plan we sell, and each person who watches pulls the whole file over the network again.

What most churches settle on, and what we suggest, is to upload video to YouTube or Facebook, where hosting and bandwidth are free, and embed the player on your own website. People still watch on your page, your archive is still easy to browse, and your hosting only serves the page around the video. If you want a sermon library people can download, keep the audio on your site, as it is small enough to cause no problems.

Looking after the site without a technical team

In Kenya, church websites are mostly built by volunteers, and in most cases a different person is looking after the site two years later. Three decisions taken at the start make the handover painless.

  • Put the domain in the church's name, not a member's. It is a familiar story: whoever set it all up has moved on, and the domain sits in their personal account. Make the church the registrant, with the church office address on the record, from the first day.
  • Give the account an address on your own domain. Use something like [email protected] that the next person in the role can be handed, not a private Gmail address that leaves with its owner.
  • Remember that backups happen automatically. Each site is backed up every day and the copies are kept for seven days, so a volunteer trying things out cannot cause lasting damage. That safety net is why it is sensible to let a willing helper learn on it.

Questions from Churches

On SiteBoma shared hosting, a small church website starts at KSh 80/month, with the domain on top: .or.ke is KSh 1,300 to register and KSh 1,500 a year to renew. Plenty of churches run a full site for less than KSh 4,000 a year.

Yes. Lipa Na M-Pesa (Till or Paybill) can be built straight into your site, so members can give wherever they are. On WordPress, ready-made donation forms with M-Pesa are available through our M-Pesa integration service.

Sermon audio plays without any trouble straight from your hosting. For long videos we suggest embedding them from your YouTube channel, which saves bandwidth and gives you streaming at no cost.

Registered churches and ministries pay the same as any small business, and our prices are already among the lowest in Kenya. If you are a denomination or a church with several branches, ask us for a custom quote.

Yes. We register and host .or.ke, .co.ke, .ke and .com domains, and .or.ke is the usual choice for ministries in Kenya. .or.ke is KSh 1,300 to register and KSh 1,500 a year to renew.

Yes. Most churches choose our Website Design service, where we build a clean, modern church site with home, about, sermons, events, contact and online giving pages for a one-time fee. Afterwards you make updates yourself through a simple admin panel.

We advise against it, and would sooner tell you that than sell you storage you have no use for. One 720p sermon video takes 500MB to 1GB, so an archive quickly fills any plan, and every viewer downloads the file again. Post video on YouTube or Facebook for free and embed the player on your page. Audio is another matter: an MP3 sermon is about 20MB, so a year of them comes to roughly 1GB and is fine to host with us.

Nothing goes wrong, as long as the domain and hosting are registered to the church rather than to an individual and the account email is on your own domain. If yours is set up the other way, we can help you transfer it into the church's name.

Yes. Add a giving page that displays your existing Paybill or Till number and explains how to send. Most churches in Kenya do this and most givers expect it. We host the page, but we do not process donations and no money goes through us, so nothing comes between your members and the church account.

Either is perfectly acceptable and both are respected. Many churches go for .or.ke since it signals a non commercial organisation. For reference, .or.ke is KSh 1,300 to register and KSh 1,500 a year to renew. .co.ke is KSh 1,200 to register and KSh 1,700 a year to renew.

Yes. Branches normally run as subdomains, such as westlands.yourchurch.or.ke, which are free and are all managed from one control panel. If a branch wants an entirely separate domain, you will need a plan with more than one website slot.

Much less than most people think. A photo sized properly for the web is about 200KB, so a thousand of them still comes to under 250MB. Photos hardly ever cause a church to run out of space. Video does.
